Read the verse's two halves in order. The condition comes first — acknowledge him in all your ways — and the promise second. That order protects you from the most common disappointment with this verse: treating the straightening as a guarantee about next quarter, when it is a guarantee about the destination.
What is actually promised?
Matthew Henry glosses the promised result with three plain words — a way made safe
and good and the issue happy at last
. Safe, good, and happy at last: the last
two words are the honest part. Nothing in the verse says the road will be short, obvious,
or paved.
Then why does it feel crooked right now?
Because guidance can include detours, and biblical guidance often has. Henry reaches for
the exodus: Those that faithfully follow the pillar of cloud and fire shall find that
though it may lead them about it leads them the right way and will bring them to Canaan at
last
. The wilderness route was longer than the coastal road — and it was still the
right way. If your path has bent lately, that is not evidence the promise failed. The
straightness is measured where you arrive.
Will God tell me what to do?
He commits to directing your paths; he does not commit to narrating them. In practice, the direction usually arrives the way the first clause trains you to receive it: through prayer that asks honestly, wisdom that weighs openly, and providence that arranges quietly. You may only recognize the straightening in hindsight — which is exactly where the psalmists usually recognized it too.
